Nice

Nice is a city and commune, and the prefecture of the department of Alpes-Maritimes, and the administrative region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. It is located on the French Riviera, the country's southeastern coast on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the French Alps. It was the capital city of the historical County of Nice. Nice is located approximately 13 kilometres west of the principality of Monaco and 30 kilometres west of the French–Italian border. It is the second most populated French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille. The Nice agglomeration extends beyond the administrative city limits, with a population of nearly one million over an area of approximately 744 km² The Nice agglomeration contains Terra Amata, an archaeological site which displays evidence of early use of fire 380,000 years ago. Around 350 BC, Greeks of Marseille founded a permanent settlement and called it Nikaia, after Nike, the goddess of victory.
